robotics

In this unit we will discover what robotics is and examine the characteristics of a robot.

We will also look at a variety of roles that robots perform and identify some advantages and disadvantages of their use.

Computer science can be separated into many different fields, some of which are:

  • artificial intelligence
  • machine learning
  • robotics
  • big data
  • web science
  • modeling and simulation

These fields overlap so computer scientists from different fields often have to work together to provide solutions to problems in the 21st century.

Robotics is a branch of computer science. It relates to the design, construction and operation of robots.

Robotics engineers design robots that can operate in a variety of different situations. Look at Scenarios A, B and C.

Scenario A - industrial robots

Industrial robots can lift and move heavy objects easily. They never get tired. They don't need to be paid. As you can see in the video, they are an example of automated systems, repeating the same actions again and again and again.

Scenario B - domestic robots

Domestic robots can do chores around the home. This frees up time for humans to do other things. Domestic robots can also be used as home help for elderly people who need help around the home. They don't complain about the chore like a human might. They just do the chore.

Scenario C - drones

Flirtey is an example of a company developing delivery drones. Delivery drones fly in the sky so they can make a direct path to someone’s home. They don't get caught up in traffic jams or have to wait at traffic lights like normal delivery vans do. They don't pollute the atmosphere as they travel from A to B. And listen! They are so quiet. Drones do need strong batteries, though. If they fail to make a delivery, that can lead to complaints.
